Transport Department caters the Transport needs of public by issuing permits to
motor vehicles. Besides issue of permits, issue of driving license, authorization
to drive Transport vehicle. Registration of vehicles comes under the purview of

To have effective control over Transport Vehicles i.e vehicles require permits,
concerned District Collector will be the Regional Transport Authority and permits
will be issued by Secretary Regional Transport authority.
Regional transport Officer is the Secretary Regional Transport Authority with regard
to issue of permits and effect suspension. Under the delegated powers by Regional
Implementation and Enforcement of Motor vehicle Act and rules made there under is
the vital role of the Transport Department.

Other Functions of Regional Transport Officer is Registering Authority with regard
to register of vehicles and Licensing Authority with regard to license person if
aggrieved by any orders of the Licensing Authority/Registering Authority may appeal

Registration numbers are allotted on the same day of Registration. The numbers are
allotted by Random method. No preference / favoritism are possible in getting Registration
number. To respect the feelings and sentiments, there is a provision under Rule
91 or TNMVR, number. “8” or totally “8” will not be allotted. Though the numbers
are allotted serially, if one desires to get any particular number can reserve numbers,
(Within thousand numbers from the starting number of that particular date by payment
of required fee).
However the Registering Authority cannot allot the following numbers which are reserved

For allotment of this numbers, permission from Government that is Letter from Home
Department is required

No person shall drive a motor vehicle in any public place unless he holds as effective
driving license. The procedures of obtaining Driving License.

Learner License shall be obtained, on completion of 18 years to drive motor cycle
exceeding 50cc and LMV and 16 years to drive motor cycle not exceeding 50cc. The
Learner License is valid for six months. Generally the LLR is not renewable. One
can appear for driving Test after 30 days from the date of issue of LLR. Accompanied
by Age proof and address proof and photos.
1A is not required for persons less than 40 years. LLR will be issued to successful
candidates, who have passed preliminary Test conducted through computers. Signals,

After 30 days of the issue of LLR but within the validity of LLR. One can appear
for driving Test to obtain permanent License. After qualifying the skill test –
test of proficiency in driving license will issued on the same day itself.

Regional Transport Office.
RC book, Insurance certificate, Pollution Certificate. If the vehicle is not owned
by the candidate in that case, Letter of authorization from the Registered owner.
There is no separate chellan. for remittance of fee. The fee can be remitted at
this office cash counters from 10 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
20 Years or up to 50 years whichever is less. On completion of Age 50 – the license
will be renewed for every 5 years. Renewal of License:
Every License shall be renewable either 30 days prior to its expiry or within 30
days from its expiry. Thereafter a belated fee or Rs.50/- will be leaned for each
year or part thereof.

Licenses to drive Transport vehicle is valid for 3 years and thereafter the license
will be renewed for every 3 years
For driving Transport Vehicle – Vehicle used for public service – obtaining Driving
Badge is compulsory. 8th standard pass is the minimum qualification for obtaining
Badges. and should complete 20 years.
